United States

United States

The United States is such a vast country that you really have to pick and choose the destinations that interest you the most.

Of course there are always the most popular stops, like San Fran, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and a trip to Disneyland on most wish lists. Oh, and of course, a game or two if you are a baseball or basketball fan is a must.

Travel Tips

  • Border control is strict in the States, so ensure all your paperwork is up to date and visas ready to go.
  • Meals in the States are huge, and one plate can often feed 2 people. If you are not a big eater then go for entree size or small plate size meals. Or better still share a meal with your partner or friend.

Travel Alerts

  • If you do not live in America, then you will need a visa. If you are from a country that falls under the Visa Waiver Program with America, then you can obtain an approved travel authorisation from ESTA.
  • Tipping is big in the States, and it is an expectation, not a choice. So make sure you have plenty of spare cash. If you do not tip then you are likely to incur the wrath of the staff, who have no qualms letting you know how unhappy they are. Of course, you are still free not to tip if you think the food or the service has been of a low standard. But, if you have enjoyed the food and the service, then ensure you tip appropriately.
  • Airlines in the States are notorious for over-booking their seats in the hope that passengers don’t turn up, or miss their flights. We travelled Business Class internally and had a situation where the flight was full, but a late arrival for business class insisted she be given a seat (even though she was the last one on board!) As a result we were all badgered about giving up our seats for the late passenger. We simply said ‘no’, but it didn’t stop the crew from badgering us on more than one occasion.

Travel Adventures

  • Depending on where you are it is worthwhile going to a baseball or basketball game.  We would suggest booking tickets before you go, as they are pretty hard to get your hands on. But the atmosphere is electric and you will enjoy being part of such a huge crowd.
