Switzerland

Some of the most stunning countryside awaits the traveller to Switzerland.

Rolling hills, deep blue skylines, vibrant green grass and quaint cabins dotting the hillside. Such a pretty country with some of the best scenery in the world. We chose to use the train system to travel from one place to another, as well as test our driving skills. Driving on the right hand side of the road is a challenge if you are not used to it, but it gave us the opportunity to drive through small villages and savour the delights of the Swiss hospitality.

Travel Tips

  • The easiest way to move around Switzerland is by train. A highly efficient network of trains take you right across the country. We used Rail Europe and we would strongly advise booking first class tickets. They may cost you a little extra, but the comfort and amenities far outweigh the cost.
  • You might like to check out Eurail which gives you information about the different types of trains to use in Europe. A very helpful site.
  • If you do wish to drive then we used Hertz Hire Car for one particular leg of our holiday. The car was in good condition and a reasonable price. Just bear in mind if you are crossing borders at all there is an additional charge to drop the car off in another country. We have not given you a link because you need to choose your location to hire a vehicle, with the booking process easy to manage.

Travel Alerts

  • If you are not used to driving on the right hand side of the road then travel by car will be a little challenging, but certainly worth a go.
  • Travellers should come prepared for colder climates, even in summer and pack appropriate clothing depending on the area being visited.

Travel Adventures

  • Depending on the season you travel there is so much to do in Switzerland. Of course the obvious is ski-ing, but if you are not into ski-ing then there are some fabulous train journeys, mountain hikes and self-guided driving holidays.
